Casson found out about her win last week after Jasmine Sangris wrote a letter to enter Larson in the draw.

The winning teacher receives a round-trip airfare to Edmonton and the student is given a laptop.

This was the 16th year the awards have been given out. Winners were drawn from more than 2,700 entries. During the first year of the awards, only 28 entries were submitted. The awards started in 1998 as a way to recognize teachers for the difference they can make in a student's life.

"Students write in about a teacher that has made a difference," said Gayla Meredith, president of the NWT Teachers' Association.

Sangris was thrilled with her laptop prize.

"I'm really happy. My last one broke and I haven't been able to fix it," she said.

Sangris talked about how Casson seems to know everything.

"She helped me catch up on my work when I was behind," said Sangris.
