While neither rain, nor snow, nor heat, nor gloom of night may keep the carriers from their appointed rounds, they pale in comparison to -40 C temperatures and 70-click winds that produce a skin-burning windchill factor nearing -60 C. Yet, for almost two years now, that's often been what Tatty and Dias have braved during the winter to make sure their customers receive their weekly copy of the Kivalliq News. Tatty, 12, loves playing peewee hockey and a little indoor soccer, as well as collecting hockey cards. He said he wanted to have his own paper route so he could earn a little spending money of his own. "To make money was why I first started, but I like doing it now," said Tatty. "I get a ride most of the time when the weather's not so good, but you still have to get out to go to all your stops. "Many of my customers give me extra tips around Christmas and I spend most of my money on sports. "It's good to meet people doing this and, I think, they're mostly happy to see me every week." Dias, 13, also plays hockey and soccer and enjoys dogmushing, as well. Like Tatty, Dias said having a little extra spending money was the main reason he decided to take a paper route. He said he's been a little surprised by how much he can make some weeks, especially if the tips are good. "I'm pretty busy, so I miss the odd week, but it's kind of fun and I like making some extra money, so I'll probably stay with it for a while longer," said Dias. "I look forward to Christmas time because the customers always give me a little present or an extra tip. "Everybody's pretty nice and they seem happy to see me come every week. "Some people already have their money out to give me for the paper before I even get to them."
