In addition to raising funds for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Jump Rope For Heart program teaches kids the importance of healthy living and social responsibility in today's fast food society.

Grade 6 teacher Maren Roberts said more than 300 students across the entire school, kindergarten to Grade 12, took part if the Jump Rope For Heart program.

She said the school participates in the annual event because it provides a day for all the students to get active, and for the teachers to promote healthy choices while raising money for a good cause.

"Being able to promote healthy choices during this event also ties in nicely with our Drop The Pop campaign which we run at about the same time every year," said Roberts.

"For the Jump Rope For Heart fundraiser, we set up the program's various activities, or stations, and the students move from station to station spending a whole afternoon skipping.

"We also do a little fundraising during our Jump Rope For Heart, so we can do our small part to help the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

"Each class does a little fundraiser and we try to have each student bring in a loonie, which most classes were able to do, and we also held a Hoops for Heart fundraiser, as well, during which students had the chance to win Calm Air tickets."

Roberts said, overall, she was very pleased with the students' participation level in the Jump Rope For Heart activities.

She said Tusarvik has taken part in the event for the past few years and it's been a win-win situation for everyone.

"We're able to raise a bit of money and the kids always have a lot of fun doing it.

"We play music over the PA system when the kids are doing their skipping, so it's a pretty good atmosphere in the school.

"Everyone involved has fun doing it."
