NUNAVUT
New Qikiqtarjuaq mayor Mary Killiktee says she has waited 20 years for this moment.

"I'm just speechless and overwhelmed with the turnout. It hasn't really sank in," she said.

Killiktee has held many positions in the community. She managed a hotel, managed the Qikiqtarjuaq Housing Association, worked as a community justice outreach worker, served four years with the District Education Authority and is a member of the community economic development committee.

"It's thanks to the great support I have from the community," she said. "I feel I am equipped for it now to sit as mayor."

Killiktee said she is looking forward to reading the hamlet act and reading policies. When she begins her first term as mayor in January she will host a mayor's open house.

"We haven't had an open house or public meeting in a long time," she said.

Nunavut News/North was unable to get in touch with new Grise Fiord Mayor Liza Ningiuk by press time.

Allen Aglukkaq was re-elected mayor of Gjoa Haven for a two-year term.

"I was surprised I got back on. I'm happy as well to be back on as mayor," he said. "I want to continue what we already started."

He said he will work with the community and council to address the community's concerns. Aglukkaq was elected for two years but he said the community will likely request the mayor's term be extended one year.

"It's a two-year term but we're going to be asking for a third year," he said.

Cambridge Bay residents have decided the arena complex should be named the "Ookpik Youth Community Arena," after a majority voted yes in a referendum. Results show 281 were in favour of the name change while 95 were not.
