Pangnirtung man missing in Kingston, Ontario College student last texted girlfriend Oct. 15, missed class next dayCasey Lessard Northern News Services Published Friday, Oct. 19, 2012
Kilabuk's girlfriend, Nunavut Sivuniksavut student Meghan Mike, last received a text from him, and he didn't show up for class the following day, which was unusual, she said. "I'm just so scared. There's no sign of him yet," Mike said Oct. 18. "I think he was alone. He went to the Raxx (a bar), and then went downtown as it shows on his RBC banking records, and after that, there's no sign of him anywhere." Kilabuk would contact Mike every day to say "Good morning," so the absence of the routine greeting Oct. 16 was unusual, she said. "I texted him, 'you always say good morning, what's wrong?'," she said. "Then I started getting worried, started calling him, but his phone said he was unavailable." Friends in Kingston went by Kilabuk's apartment, and found nothing but his dog. "He loves this dog with everything," she said, noting he was a responsible dog owner. "He would never, ever, ever leave her alone, but he left her alone all night, all day, and all night again. She peed in the house. "Every time I went out with him, he would say, 'I have to go take Bella out.' Bella's always first." With Mike at school in Ottawa, Kilabuk had been drinking without her knowledge, she learned. "He's gotten drunk so many times and he knows when to go home and where to go. He never doesn't show up," she said, noting that at 5'9" and 240 lbs., he could manage if he got into trouble. "He's a big man. He knows how to defend himself." Mike's mother was set to arrive in Kingston Oct. 18, while Kilabuk's family was staying in Pangnirtung to support Ken's grandmother, who had a deep affection for her grandson, Mike said. "Everybody's been texting, calling and posting on Facebook," she said, describing the support she's received. Police are still looking for the carpentry student, Kingston Police media relations officer Joanne Geikie said. "Kingston Police are concerned for his safety," Geikie said.
