Boating tragedy in the Big Snye Fort Providence resident dies after canoe capsizesMiranda Scotland Northern News Services Published Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012
The man, identifed as Earl Canadien by a town resident, was with two other men on a moose hunt south of Fort Providence when the incident happened. None of the boaters were wearing life jackets. Two of the men were able to make it to shore when the canoe capsized at about 3 p.m. but they were unable to find their friend. RCMP conducted a search for the man that evening until it was too dark to continue. Death not suspicious The search resumed the next day and, with the assistance of a helicopter, police found the missing man in the water near the shore. The man's death is not being considered suspicious. With the hunting season now underway, Cpl. Barry Ledoux is reminding residents to be prepared for any hardships they may encounter while out on the land. Hunters should have a travel plan in place before they go and they should let someone know when they expect to return, he said. He also said residents should make sure they dress for the colder weather while they are travelling. Lastly, he advised everyone to always take precautions while out on the water. "When they are out on the water all occupants of the boat should be wearing a life jacket regardless of the size of the body of water they're on," Ledoux said. Canadien is survived by his wife and four children. Funeral services will be held today at Our Lady of Providence Church beginning at 2 p.m.
