Google Street View coming to Cambridge Bay Jeanne Gagnon Northern News Services Published Monday, Aug 20, 2012
A person riding a camera-mounted tricycle will ride the streets of Cambridge Bay from Aug. 20 to 24, capturing images of the streets and buildings for Google Street View, said Chris Kalluk, Geographic Information System and Information Technology co-ordinator with Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. Faces and licence plates will be blurred before the images go online, a process that could take one to five months, he added. "So far, all the people I've talked to are saying that 'it's great, it's amazing and it's about time.' They see it everywhere else except for the North," said Kalluk. "It will allow people from everywhere else in the world to explore and navigate though the streets in Nunavut, showing them our culture and stuff. It will be nice for other people in the world to see what it's like in Cambridge." Kalluk, who makes maps and fixes computers at the land claim organization, approached Google when attending a Google outreach workshop in Vancouver last year. The search engine Google created Google Earth, which then created Street View, he explained. He added other Nunavut communities will be featured, likely starting next year with Rankin Inlet, Iqaluit and possibly Kugaaruk. Kalluk said the plan is to do it all. Cambridge Bay Mayor Jeannie Ehaloak said the project is great news. "We're excited about it. It will be interesting," she said. "As soon as I see how it looks, I'll (tell) people to look at it." A Google representative acknowledged that Street View would be coming to the community but was not willing to share further details until later this week.
