Pope Benedict XVI sent Barthelemy Nirlungayuk and his wife, Sidonie, an apostolic blessing to mark their 50th wedding anniversary. The couple were married on Aug. 1, 1962, in Kugaaruk, then known as Pelly Bay. Sidonie said it has been a wonderful 50 years. "I'm happy," said Sidonie of the blessing. "It's given from the Pope to us, that's why (it's so special). I was surprised." The apostolic blessing was proudly displayed during the Aug. 9 celebrations with family at the couple's home in Kugaaruk. To receive a blessing for a special occasions such as an anniversary or a wedding, it must be requested from the community's parish. "It's very special," said the couple's daughter, Mary. "Being acknowledged by the Pope for their 50th wedding anniversary, for the family, it's quite significant." Sidonie made a speech during the lunchtime celebrations, added Mary. "You are faced with challenges," Mary said her mother mentioned. "Even with challenges, you try to move forward, regardless of what the challenge is you are faced with. And respect each other as a couple." Barthelemy, now 73, was born and raised in the Taloyoak area before a Kugaaruk family adopted him when he was 10 years old. Sidonie, now 67, was born and raised near Kugaaruk. The couple had nine children -- five daughters and four sons -- eight of which are still living, and more than 30 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Barthelemy and Sidonie have been christian leaders with the Kugaaruk Roman Catholic parish for about 40 years. In that role, they perform tasks such as prepare people to receive sacraments and lead celebrations when the priest is absent. The family is proud of them, said Mary "Being 50th anniversary, it's quite significant on their part," said Mary. "At the time, when they got married, they didn't think they were ever going to reach their 50 years."
