Ferrell a Yellowknife fan

Hollywood comic actor Will Ferrell gave his second shout out to Yellowknife this year while promoting his upcoming film The Campaign in Toronto on Monday.

The first occurred in April when Ferrell suggested during an interview that he and Don Cherry had "enjoyed" road trips to the capital of the NWT. Ferrell's film The Campaign premieres on Aug. 10 but its arrival date in Yellowknife has yet to be determined.

Up in smoke

Theatrical smoke may be visible near Vee Lake Road and Giant Mine tomorrow during filming for an undisclosed movie or TV show.

A public notice issued by Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada states the smoke is designed to resemble a forest fire but will not involve flames and will occur away from buildings.

Smoke may have been visible in the same area last Saturday for the same reason.

"(I) got asked to play a media reporter for the new season of Arctic Air today," he said.

More food going around

Kivalliq

More than 360,000 pounds (163,293 kg) of country food was shipped through Sakku First Aviation and Qikiqtani First Aviation between July 1, 2011, and June 30, 2012, the aviation companies announced on July 23.

This is a 308 per cent increase to previous annual averages of country food shipping. The companies attribute this growth to the introduction of a $1.50-per-kilogram country food shipping rate introduced on July 1 at the behest of the Kivalliq Inuit Association and the Qikiqtani Inuit Association.

"This represents a significant way that Inuit are helping Inuit have access to lower cost, nutritious country food," said Patrick Tagoona, president of Sakku First Aviation.

Important dates for wildlife management board

Kivalliq

The deadline for submitting input to the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board's decision on how to manage the Western Hudson Bay polar bear population was this past Monday.

It will be holding a decision-making session on managing the polar bears, as well as its integrated fisheries management plan for narwhal, in Iqaluit from Aug. 13 to 15.

KIA offices move

Rankin Inlet

The Kivalliq Inuit Association office in Rankin Inlet moved to a new home on July 26.

It is now in the new Sakku Development Corp. building, across from the old post office.

"Everyone is in one building now," said Gabriel Karlik, the communications person for KIA, explaining that at the previous site the social development branch was housed in a separate area.

He said Sakku Development Corp. is moving in to its offices in the new building this week.
