Court briefs Second man pleads guilty to robbing taxi driver Northern News Services Published Friday, Aug 17, 2012
Sean Qitsualik, 26, pleaded guilty to the single count Monday. He had previously pleaded not guilty and requested that his case be heard by Supreme Court judge and jury. Supreme Court Justice Virginia Schuler accepted Qitsualik's plea after ensuring the accused understood the plea was voluntary and would not affect the court's handling of three other charges related to the incident that remain before the courts. Qitsualik is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 17. His co-accused in the Dec. 3 incident, Brent Michael, has also pleaded guilty and is scheduled to be sentenced the same day. - Laura Busch Fraud and theft sentencing delayed The case against a Yellowknife woman who has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $80,000 from her employer has been adjourned until September so the victim and the victim's family can be present. Coleen Laura McClean, 62, set to be sentenced on three charges Wednesday, had pleaded guilty in late May to stealing more than $5,000 from a Yellowknife communications company and using forged cheques as if they were genuine. McClean faces another 124 charges of falsifying and then using cheques between May 2008 and May 2011. However, those charges are expected to be dropped. If McClean is convicted of theft over $5,000 and the charge for using forged cheques, she will face a maximum of 12 years imprisonment. She is expected back in court on Sept. 19, when her former employer is scheduled to give a victim impact statement. - Miranda Scotland Drunk driver jailed, banned from driving for six years A 33-year-old man was sentenced to four months in jail and received a three-year driver's licence suspension after pleading guilty Wednesday afternoon to impaired driving. This is the third drinking and driving offence for Patrick Lloyd Coe in the past five years. Coe was arrested on May 6 by Yellowknife RCMP after the vehicle he was driving was observed swerving and being driven in an erratic manner downtown. Coe's vehicle was not registered, nor insured, and his blood alcohol level was 220 grams per 100 millilitres of blood, making it nearly three times the legal limit. At the time of his arrest, Coe was serving an 18-month driving suspension from a conviction in July 2011. Judge Christine Gagnon gave him a further three-year driving suspension for violating his previous driving ban, leaving him ineligible to drive for a total of six years. Coe was also sentenced to one year of probation to begin after his jail term is completed. Gagnon added a 40-hour community service stipulation to be served toward an alcohol awareness activity. - Sara Wilson
