The golfers were participating in the annual Deh Cho Friendship Centre's Aboriginal Day Golf Tournament.

"It was a good day," said Shane Thompson, the president of the club.

With the 36 golfers divided into teams of two, it put two teams on every hole during the 18-hole, two-person scramble tournament. Close scores marked the tournament.

First place went to Kevin Menicoche and Keone Villeneuve with 77.

Earlier in the day, while still in the thick of the tournament, Menicoche said he was enjoying the event.

"It's been great so far," he said. "The weather is holding out."

The tournament was Menicoche's third event of the day.

He started Aboriginal Day by joining in the community breakfast that Kids Corner Daycare served and then visited with the residents of Nahanni Butte in the student residence before coming to the golf course.

Second place in the tournament went to Mark Gillis and Trevor Kjeldsli with 78 followed by Rick and Pat Rowe and Keyna Norwegian and Gabe Buggins who were all tied at 79.

Norwegian has participated in the Aboriginal Day tournament every year that it has been offered.

The weather this year is beautiful, she said while preparing to tee off on hole one.

"It's good to see a bunch of people out," said Norwegian.

The weather did hold for most of the tournament, although it started to rain heavily and then hail as the teams started to come in after the final holes, said Thompson.

Individual prizes went to Steven Gooderham and Cherise Gardipee for the shortest drive for men and women.

Closest to the pin went to Eric Menicoche and Tanya Hurst. Gordon Thompson and Keyna Norwegian came away with the longest drives.
