Food Rescue receives extension at Old Airport Road facility Simon Whitehouse Northern News Services Published Friday, July 27, 2012
"I am very much in support of the Food Rescue and they are a very hard-working group of volunteers," said city councillor Amanda Mallon. "I do feel they should belong in the downtown at a central location where their clientele can access them. I do think it would be hubris to find ways to support and help food rescue set up, but I think it is something." Council agreed to allow the organization to extend its term in the tent facility on Old Airport Road from Sept. 1, 2012 to Aug. 31, 2014, because the organization had submitted a development permit application for the extension back in May. Ultimately, the organization is looking for a permanent facility and the search is "ongoing," according to co-founder Ruby Trudel. She said, however, that downtown is not necessarily the spot. "We have been here for three years and have not been able to find another facility," she said. "This decision enables us to continue our operation. "I think (a downtown location) is somebody else's idea rather than our idea because this is a very good location. It is strategically located to our suppliers," she said. Trudel said this means there is easy access to what she calls very generous grocery stores and Pizza Hut, where food can be "rescued" from the landfill. As well, daily deliveries are given out to a select clientele. According to the city memorandum, Food Rescue has been at the location sine June 2009. In August 2010, council approved the organization's occupation of the tent facility until August 2012, on the condition that a long-term plan be provided.
