Students from the program took it upon themselves to design and manufacture a new sign welcoming people to the school. The sign was officially placed on Sakku School this past month. Industrial arts program instructor Paul Yanchus said the school sign is, basically, an extension of a sign project the students did earlier in the school year that focused primarily on family names. He said a number of students took it upon themselves to router-out a sign in syllabics, with a small English translation on the side, for Sakku School. "They became quite good with the router this past semester and that, kind of, boosted their confidence to take on this project," said Yanchus. "We didn't have a sign at the school of any sort of substance, so some of the students decided to do it on their own. "One student, especially, Samson Ell, actually routed it. "He's become absolutely exquisite with a router and that shows in the final product." Yanchus said Ell routed-out the sign during every spare moment he had in class. He said a number of other students then got involved to help paint the sign and layer it with a rubber latex, before it was time to add a unique element to the finished product. "We turned the sign upside down and sent it around for all the students in the school to sign the back of it. "There were about 10 to 12 students involved in the making of the sign. "The main thrust, however, came from Samson, who has really impressive artistic abilities. "He took the main lead on the project, but the other students chipped in to help finish it off, so it was nice to see that level of co-operation come about to complete the project."
