Erasmus Apparel opens storefront Thandiwe Vela Northern News Services Published Wednesday, May 9, 2012
The graphic design and custom printing brainchild of Yellowknifer Sarah Erasmus, Erasmus Apparel held the grand opening of its retail store last weekend, after moving from its Kam Lake warehouse earlier this year. "We found as people become more and more aware of what we're making, and there's more demand and requests for the unique Yellowknife designs that Sarah comes up with, that it kind of made sense to move into a space that had retail space in it, because out in Kam Lake, it was all production," said Warren McLeod, part owner of the company. Having the new downtown storefront to display all the company's products and services is "awesome," said full-time production manager Graeme Chan, who, along with Erasmus, is a graduate of St. Patrick High School. Located between Quality Furniture and the Second Hand Swap Shop, the small apparel retail store also houses the company's sign-making and other production equipment, including its 1,000-plus-pound manual screen printing press. Since the company's printing services got up and running last year, there's been a real demand for custom orders, McLeod said, especially for corporate events and sports teams in the North. "People have really gone out of their way to support the local business, which is great," Chan said, adding with the new storefront, he expects the retail end of the business to take off. The 100 per cent aboriginal owned and operated business celebrated the grand opening of the storefront on Saturday, and served caribou and bannock stew to the upwards of 100 well-wishers who came by.
