Artcirq to perform for the Queen Jeanne Gagnon Northern News Services Published Monday, May 7, 2012
The Iglulik-based circus group, along with the RCMP Musical Ride and the Canadian Tenors, will participate in several events in honour of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, celebrating the 60th anniversary of British monarch Elizabeth II's ascension to the throne. Canada will open the evening's performances at the Diamond Jubilee Pageant from May 10 to 13, with members of the Royal Family in attendance and the Queen present on May 13. Artcirq will drum dance and throat sing during the performances, said president and co-founder Guillaume Saladin. He added he understands the group will perform in other events but was unsure of the schedule at this point. The RCMP Musical Ride will perform at the Royal Windsor Horse Show in the afternoons of May 10, 12 and 13. "Very excited and honoured, very much. To represent Canada - wow, that's awesome," said Saladin, adding the group is not that nervous. "We know what we do and we just need to integrate ourselves with the rest of the performers and feel as strong as possible." Saladin said this will be Artcirq's inaugural performance for the Royal Family. Leaving for England on May 3 are Saladin; Terence Uyarak, a drum dancer from Iglulik; Thomas Johnston, a drum dancer from Iqaluit; Celina Kalluk, a throat singer from Toronto; and Lois Suluk-Locke, a throat singer from Arviat. Suluk-Locke said it's hard to put into words how she feels about performing for the Queen and Royal family. "I don't think the reality has sunk in yet. I think I'll have more excitement when I wake up tomorrow (May 3) and realize it's real," she said, adding she was not nervous. "It's one in a lifetime opportunity, which I will probably never have again. I don't know how to put it in words. It didn't sink in yet so I will probably cry tomorrow."
