Students from Sir John Franklin High School spoke about their experiences in Kenya at the most recent Yk Education District No. 1 school board meeting Tuesday.

Eleven students in total participated in the Kenya trip, an event that was "once in a lifetime," according to more than one student.

The students presented a slideshow to the board, narrating it with their experiences as they went.

Their presentation to the board and the donation of two framed photos from Kenya were ways of thanking the board for its support.

The trip came after months of fundraising and planning. With the help of community and local business donations, the group was able to build a new school and bring much-needed supplies to Kenya.

Hannah Lowing was the one who cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony for the school in Simotwet. The students raised funds for the construction of the building, which was done through the organization A Better World Canada.

"My whole experience in Kenya was amazing and has changed me for the better," she said. "This trip has made me realize how privileged I am."

Board trustee Mira Hall said she really appreciated the chance to see the presentation.

"It's been really nice to see the progression from idea to fruition," she said.

The group plans to hold an event thanking the community at large for its support.

Super Soccer sportsmanship

Trustee Terry Brookes praised the performance of all teams competing in Super Soccer, but wished to point out the sportsmanship of two teams from William McDonald Middle School that made it to the finals.

"These two Yk teams got together and cheered each other on," said Brookes.

"Even though they were competitors and the game went into shootout, they never stopped supporting each other," he said.

Brookes said it was important to notice how much the students enjoyed their time being active, especially given the rising rates of childhood obesity.

"It was a true show of sportsmanship and they should be congratulated," he said.

Preschool and kindergarten at 2012 Trade Show

The Yk Education District No. 1 will be showcasing their preschool and kindergarten programs at this year's trade show.

"We'll have the backpacks to give away for the students that are registered," said superintendent Metro Huculak.

There will be teachers from the programs available on site to meet with parents and answer questions.
