The basement of the Danarey Building on 50 Street looks like something out of an episode of Hoarders. And the Danareys wouldn't have it any other way.

Dan and Nancy Danarey are branching out yet again. The pair have poured their collective efforts into Dan's Place - a new store specializing in pre-loved items.

"This is the product of 40 years of hoarding," Dan joked as he walked among the thousands of items in the shop.

The long-time Yellowknife resident and Dawson Creek, B.C. native sold his property in Kam Lake earlier this year and decided to put his "treasures" up for sale.

"I firmly believe - don't throw it out, give it to somebody, and we're good people to give it to," he said.

He wasn't kidding, either.

Dan's Place has everything from glassware to used hockey gear for sale. The aim is to specialize in used fitness and hockey equipment.

"We're not going to cater too much to furniture, maybe table and chairs, but we're going to focus on hockey, fitness, movies and books and DVDs and a bit of art and antiques," he said.

In addition to working at Yellowknife Motors, running the legion and managing a catering company, Dan isn't shy of hard work.

"I've always dreamt of having this place. It took a long time to twist my wife's arm to let me do it," he said. "But it's here now and I'm excited."

Donated items are welcome, but as the store establishes itself, they will start buying more items to stock the shelves.

The long-term goal for the couple is to offer - in addition to smaller items - an old-style skate sharping service and swap deal with Headgear.

"Here they will be able to trade some of their old stuff for new stuff upstairs at Headgear," he said. "They can bring in their old stuff - especially the hockey equipment, and trade it for some new pants or back-to-school items upstairs."

Dan's Place is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
