Aurora College fundraiser
The Aurora Campus staff social committee and the Aurora Campus Student Association are raising money after a fire in Iqaluit destroyed 22 apartment units and left 90 people homeless. Donations are being accepted on the Aurora College website until the end of March.

New look for Old Airport Road
Old Airport Road is in the process of getting a makeover when foliage is planted along the thoroughfare from Borden Drive to Byrne Road. New crosswalks are being added, as well. The design drawings can be viewed on the city website. The public is encouraged to contribute their comments online until March 9.

Awards ceremony celebrates community women
The Status of Women Council of the NWT is hosting the 20th annual Wise Women Awards tomorrow. The awards ceremony recognizes female role models in the community who make a difference for children, women and families. A public Bread and Roses Luncheon will be held tomorrow from noon to 1 p.m. at the legislative assembly.

Nutrition North chair resigns
Arviat - Nutrition North Advisory Board chairperson Elizabeth Copland of Arviat has stepped down.
Copland's resignation became effective on March 1.
Copland, who is also Nunavut's deputy coroner, cited personal reasons for leaving the board, and said she plans to focus more on her other duties with the government.
Chamber AGM
Rankin Inlet/Kivalliq - The Kivalliq Chamber of Commerce will be hosting its annual general meeting (AGM) at the Siniktarvik Hotel in Rankin Inlet from March 19 to 21.
The event will begin on March 19 with a licensed meet and greet, followed on March 20 by a day of various speeches by the mining sector, government officials and the airline industry.
The evening of March 20 will also see a licensed banquet and entertainment held at the hotel.
The Chamber's AGM meeting will begin on the morning of March 21 and continue throughout the day.
Wolf woes in Baker Lake
Baker Lake - Numerous wolf sightings have been reported in and around the community of Baker Lake during the past two weeks. One report had a wolf shot after killing a dog and entering a home in Baker.
Raising funds for Iqaluit fire victims
Rankin Inlet - Members of the Nunavut Arctic College student council in Rankin Inlet are holding a raffle to raise funds to help those who lost their belongings and were left homeless in the fire in Iqaluit this past month.
Many of those affected by the fire were adult students attending Arctic College and their families.
The raffle will be drawn on March 20, featuring top prizes of a 12-foot by 16-foot cabin, 45 gallons of gas and a sled that can be used for traditional hunting.
Student council members are currently seeking donations of items such as a Coleman stove, lantern, sleeping bag, foam mattress, trap, grub box and naptha, among others, to fullyequip the sled.
The council members hope to raise $20,000 from the raffle to donate to the fire victims.
Members of the camp cook program in Rankin also helped raise donations for the families by holding a student bake sale this past Friday.
The event featured homemade goodies such as cinnamon buns, brownies, date squares, muffins, buns, bread and cookies.
All funds raised at the sale will be donated to the Red Cross for the victims of the fire in Iqaluit.
Big numbers
Rankin Inlet - The website for the Polar Bear Plate juvenilejunior hockey tournament in Rankin Inlet this past month was kept busy.
The website reports a total of 22,279 hits during the tournament from 2,848 visits, of which 1,275 were unique visitors.
Twitter was also added to the site for the Plate and proved itself to be quite popular.
Scores will be tweeted from the upcoming First Air Avataq Cup senior men's hockey championship in Rankin from March 14 to 18.
The Twitter feed will originate from @RankinHockey, using hashtag #sfac2012.
