Deh Cho Bridge span complete
The two sides of the structure spanning the Mackenzie River near Fort Providence were joined Sunday, a mileston in the construction of the Deh Cho Bridge.
Construction crews can now move on to installing deck panels and working on the secondary pylons and cables, said Earl Blacklock, communications manager for the GNWT's department of transportation.
"We are still anticipating completion by the fall of this year," Blacklock told Yellowknifer. "It is expected that this will be the last ice bridge. Of course, we don't say anything is definite when it comes to infrastructure."

NWT Habitat for Humanity taking applications
There are only 12 days left for prospective homeowners to apply for an affordable home from Habitat for Humanity NWT.
The organization is accepting applications until March 12 for two affordable, three-bedroom homes in the Niven Lake subdivision.
In order to qualify as partner families, applicants must meet national low-income standards; be able to repay a no-interest, income-geared mortgage; demonstrate a need for safe, affordable housing and be willing to partner with Habitat for Humanity NWT to build their own home or participate in other projects.

SPCA raffle almost over
Tickets are still available for the NWT SPCA's Throw Us a Bone Raffle, to be drawn on March 3. Tickets can be purchased at Borealis Pet Supplies, Top of the World Travel and Sutherland's Drugs.
Prizes are valued at about $8,500 and include a trip from Top of the World Travel, and a snowmobile and an ATV from Force One.

Spring cleanup
Non-profit youth groups are being invited to submit applications to the City of Yellowknife for the 2012 Spring Clean Up.
This year's cleanup is scheduled to take place from May 7 to 13 and application forms, are due at city hall by March 30, are available at city hall and on the city's website.

Cans of benefit
Arviat - Arviat's Sila Rainbow group was presented with a $3,000 cheque earlier this month for the recycling efforts of its members.
Sila Rainbow is a volunteer, nonprofit organization that focuses on supporting youth in the community by promoting a variety of causes such as healthy living and antibullying strategies.
The group focused on recycling as a way of fundraising and collected enough aluminium recyclables to fill two sea cans. Arctic Cooperatives Limited launched its aluminium can recycling project on behalf of member Coops in Nunavut this past spring.
Since its inception, the project has shown how a community can achieve a cleaner environment and reduce consumption of a nonrenewable resource.
Chisel and scoop program
Rankin Inlet - The Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre is sponsoring an ice-chisel (tuuq) and ice-scooper (iilaut) program through the Makkuktut Sangiktilirput Youth Program.
The program is aimed at young men aged 18 to 24 and is tentatively scheduled to begin this coming Monday, March 5, at the Nunavut Trades School shop.
The course will run from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
All tools and materials will be provided, and participants keep their chisels and scoops when completed.
Anyone interested in attending the program are asked to phone the friendship centre in Rankin.
Employee award
Repulse Bay - Colin Laidlaw of the Northern store in Repulse Bay was among 17 North West Company employees honoured with the chain's President's Award in celebration of its 25th anniversary as an independent company earlier this month.
Laidlaw earned the President's Award in the leadership category.
Calling all writers
Kivalliq - Inuit writers across the Kivalliq, aged 14-29, are reminded the Canadian Aboriginal Writing and Arts Challenge is now accepting submissions.
The challenge gives young writers the chance to show their creativity and explore their heritage.

Power outage
Baker Lake - People in Baker Lake had to make do without power for about 15 minutes this past Sunday, Feb. 26, as the Qulliq Energy Corp. initiated a planned outage for testing purposes.
