Budget approved

The Village of Fort Simpson has passed its new capital budget.

Councillors approved $2,742,985 in spending for the 2012-2013 fiscal year, during a meeting on Feb. 6. The inclusion of $700,000 for the new swimming pool is one of the projects the council is excited about, said Mayor Sean Whelly.

The amount is expected to be enough to complete the pool and have it ready for use by the summer of 2013. In the budget, $60,000 has also been set aside to upgrade the current pool so it can be used for a further year.

Whelly said he's also pleased with the $500,000 budgeted for road construction and resurfacing. If there is a contractor in the area doing chipsealing, the village hopes to hire them, saving mobilization costs, to chipseal some of the remaining gravel roads in the village.

The village is planning to hold a public meeting to discuss the capital budget with residents.
