Dettah ice road open to light traffic

Lake access to the community of Dettah was opened to light vehicle traffic over the weekend following last week's warning to stay off the ice road while construction was underway.

On Saturday, the road was officially opened to vehicles with a weight restriction of 4,000 kg.

Meanwhile, the Merv Herdie ferry is still servicing the highway crossing at the Mackenzie River because ice in the area is not thick enough to support a winter road crossing.

Fire alarm at the Gold Range

Dozens of patrons in the Gold Range bar and guests in the Gold Range Hotel on 50 Street in downtown Yellowknife had to evacuate temporarily on New Year's Eve after a fire alarm went off.

New Year's Eve revellers were able to return to the licensed establishment at about 10:50 p.m., said a Yellowknife firefighter at the scene. It turned out that it was a false alarm.

The population of the NWT decreased by 0.7 per cent in 2011, bringing the total population to 43,485 on Oct. 1, 2011. One year prior, the territorial population was at 43,806, according to a press release from the NWT Bureau of Statistics.

The NWT decrease followed an upswing in 2010, which saw the population grow by 0.9 per cent. Of all the provinces and territories, only the NWT has experienced a decline since 2008 - both this year and in 2009.

Chopper news

Iqaluit/Nunavut

Trinity Helicopters has announced the start of fulltime operations in Iqaluit to provide faster response, better access and lower costs for helicopter services in Nunavut.

Trinity is leasing space in the Keewatin Air hanger in Iqaluit, which has allowed the company to make the transition from a support base to a fullyoperational one.

The new, full-service base in Iqaluit complements the services provided by the company out of its Yellowknife headquarters.

Trinity is now planning to begin full-time operations in Cambridge Bay by this month to support its partner, Qillaq Innovations.
