The event runs from Feb. 23 to 26, and will feature the return of the Team Nunavut Arctic Winter Games midget squad. Team Nunavut took silver at the 2010 Plate. Tournament organizer David Clark said a number of different organizations stepped up to help this year's tournament be another success. He said Hockey Nunavut contributed $15,000 to the event, while the Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA) donated $5,000 "I think Hockey Nunavut recognizes the value of the Polar Bear Plate to players in that age group, and I thank the organization for its support of the event," said Clark. "The KIA sees it as a regional tournament promoting physical activity and healthy living, while providing a positive experience to a group of young men in the Kivalliq region. "I write a letter to the KIA asking for support every year, and it's always been a strong supporter of the Polar Bear Plate and has always helped out. "This year our hamlet rec committee was generous enough to give us a bingo slot in support of the tournament, and I also received $2,000 toward the event from Dowland Construction." This will be the fifth year for the Plate since Clark resurrected the event in 2008. Clark said in addition to the AWG midget squad, two teams from Rankin Inlet, Coral Harbour and Whale Cove are confirmed for the Plate. He said the number of teams will likely increase. "I'm still waiting for confirmation from Arviat and Repulse Bay, who attend almost every year, as well as Chesterfield Inlet. "The deadline to register isn't until next week (Feb. 4), so teams have until then to let me know they're coming and be included in the schedule. "Having the AWG team compete always adds a little excitement to this tournament. "And the crowds are almost always big because so many people enjoy coming to watch full-contact hockey, which we really don't see that much of in Rankin."
