Life threatening injuries after snowmobile crash
RCMP are investigating the cause of a snowmobile collision Friday night on Kam Lake Road near the Great Slave Animal Hospital.
The collision involving a single snowmobile occurred at approximately 11:40 p.m. Friday and resulted in life-threatening injuries to a 40-year-old Yellowknife man.
"He was medevaced to Edmonton with life-threatening injuries and his condition is unknown at this time," said RCMP spokesperson Const. Kathy Law, adding she couldn't comment on the cause of the crash.

New judge
Shannon Smallwood was sworn is as the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories' newest Supreme Court judge last Friday. Smallwood is the first Dene justice to be appointed to the superior court. This appointment also marks the first time the NWT has an all-female, full-time Supreme Court bench, though Justice Edward Richard remains a supernumerary judge for the court.

Travelling minister
David Ramsay, minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment, is in Juneau, Alaska, from Jan. 17 to 20 attending the Pacific Northwest Economic Region (PNWER) Capital Visit. Political leaders from Western Pacific states, provinces and territories are meeting to discuss topics such as economic and tourism development, and emergency preparedness.

Lutsel K'e chief loses home to fire
RCMP were called to 6:59 a.m. fire Tuesday with a report that a residence was burning. Upon arrival, emergency responders found community members on scene trying to extinguish a blaze that had engulfed the log home of Lutsel K'e chief Antoine Michel.
Michel was not at the residence at the time, and the two occupants were able to escape. One family member received minor injuries.

Volleyball time
Baker Lake
The male and female Nunavut Territorial Volleyball Championships will be held in Baker Lake from Jan. 27-29.
The action is expected to be fast in both divisions throughout the event.
Filming planned
Arviat
The cast of the Bright Blue Mailbox Suicide Note are gearing up to perform the Lindsay Pricepenned play once again so that it may be filmed for possible future use by Nunavut's Department of Education.
The cast performed the play under the direction of Gord Billard to rave reviews in 2011.
Positive signs
Baker Lake
The Kivalliq Energy Corp. reported encouraging assay results from 1,732 metres of diamond drilling in 14 holes conducted in 2011 at the Blaze, Spark, Pulse and Joule Zones of its Angilik uranium project near Baker Lake.
The company stated the results demonstrate its success at identifying a growing number of mineralized targets near the resource area.
The encouraging values from exploration drilling have verified its targeting techniques on previously untested conductive trends parallel to the Lac Cinquante main zone.
Plane grounded
Arviat
A Calm Air flight had to be grounded in Arviat after its windshield cracked during a regularly scheduled stop in the community this past week.
A total of 13 passengers were on-board the plane on their way to Winnipeg and Thompson, Man., at the time of the incident.
The airline issued a statement saying the incident was not weather related, and the passengers and crew were never in danger as a result of the incident.
