Bridge funding stupid: Macleans
The Deh Cho Bridge project ranked 12th in a feature story last Thursday in Macleans magazine titled "99 stupid things the government spent your money on."
However, the entry wags its finger at the province of New Brunswick, rather than the NWT, for paying $4 million of taxpayers' money to fix a bridge being built 3,600 km away from home.
"The province guaranteed $70 million worth of loans for Miramichi-based Atcon Group, the general contractor for the $182-million Deh Cho Bridge project," Macleans said.

Falvo backs Godson
City councillor Paul Falvo is inviting the public to support local recording artist, slam poet and rapper Aaron 'Godson' Hernandez, who is in a contest to win a major record deal with EMI Records.
Falvo said he would like to see residents support one of their own artists, who is among 30 musicians collecting votes. Godson could win album art and design, product marketing, a release of a single to national radio stations, distribution of the single and a chance to open for a major EMI act. Falvo urged residents to either text 'vote Godson" to 7999 on their cellphones or vote online. Go to nnsl.com/arts and follow the link before Jan. 31.

Communications in spotlight
The theme for an art show during the city of Yellowknife's Heritage Week 2012, Feb. 20-26, has been announced as "communication."
"In Yellowknife's short history our 'communication' has evolved from the Army Signals Corp., telegraph, mail by sleigh from Fort McMurray, to the immediacy of cell service, the Internet and instant access to the entire world, all within a brief 75 years," said Mayor Gord Van Tighem.

Frequent Santa miles
Kivalliq - Hamlets across the Kivalliq region were among the 17 Nunavut communities Santa Claus visited this past month as part of the annual Keewatin Air Santa Flight promotion.
The annual promotion was originally a Kivalliqonly affair, but was expanded this year after Keewatin expanded its medevac service to the Baffin region in 2011.
The only communities that saw the Santa Express thwarted by inclement weather were Kimmirut and Grise Fiord.
