At least one person was left homeless after a pre-dawn fire Friday at a public housing unit on Sissons Court.

According to city spokesperson Richard McIntosh, firefighters and paramedics were called to the townhouse at 2002 Sissons Crt. at about 3:30 a.m.

"The initial fire crew arrived on scene to find flames and heavy smoke coming from a first floor kitchen window of the unit," he stated, adding additional fire crews were called in to help. "The fire was contained to the first floor of the unit with heavy smoke and fire damage. With the fire extinguished, crews were able to verify that the fire did not spread to adjacent units."

McIntosh said one person was transported from the home to Stanton Territorial Hospital for a follow-up evaluation. It was not clear if that person was the only one home at the time or if they were the only person living there. McIntosh did not update that person's condition and no name has been released.

McIntosh added the fire was fought with two aerial/pumpers, one rescue truck, a command vehicle and 17 emergency personnel. He said RCMP was also on scene for traffic and crowd control.

The cause of the fire and an amount of damage had not been determined as of press time.

The NWT Fire Marshal's Office is investigating.
