Third sharing circle tonight

As the inquiry into missing Indigenous women and girls visits Yellowknife this week, the Native Women's Association of the NWT is holding sharing circles to provide support to those who need it.

The last of the three circles is scheduled for tonight at the Native Women's Association office above Yellowknife's main post office from 4 to 7 p.m. Marie Speakman, family support worker, said anyone can come and share their story of systemic abuse or violence, treatment by the justice system or other relevant experiences they need assistance with.

Water joy

Whale Cove

The community of Whale Cove finally received some good news on the water front when federal Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, Amarjeet Sohi, and Nunavut Minister of Community and Government Services, Joe Savikataaq, jointly announced $500,000 in combined funding for the Whale Cove emergency water supply project this past Friday, Aug. 25.

Whale Cove has been under boil water advisories during the summer months for the past three years due to high levels of coliforms detected in its drinking water.

The project announced for Whale Cove involves installing a portable water treatment unit to introduce a set of three inline filters into the treatment process.

The Government of Nunavut is reviewing long-term solutions to address water treatment issues.

Once implemented, the portable water treatment unit, secured under the Government of Canada's Small Communities Fund, will be available as a rapid response to other drinking water emergencies in Nunavut.
