Inquiry headed to Yellowknife

The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls is coming to Yellowknife.

According to Tiar Wilson, communications officer with the inquiry, there will be a community visit to the city on Aug. 28 and a community hearing held on Nov. 13.

Marion Buller, chief commissioner of the inquiry, made the announcement Thursday in Vancouver.

Fundraiser held for fire victims

A local food truck vendor is raising funds for victims of the Northlands fire.

Murray's Curbside Treats 'n

Eats will be donating half of all their sales from 'Fish Taco Friday' to those who lost their homes in this week's house fire, according to information posted to the vendor's Facebook page.

Two homes were destroyed in a fire on Norseman Drive Monday afternoon and some animals were missing, although no people were hurt.

Midnight Sun Fly In underway

The bi-annual Midnight Sun Fly In festival kicked off yesterday.

Activities were to run from yesterday to Sunday and include the display of a new Viking Air Twin Otter at the Wardair Dock, a pancake breakfast, a fish fry and a burlesque

show.

The memorial fly-past over pilot's monument will also take place Sunday morning.

Folk on the Rocks app available

Folk on the Rocks is almost here and the festival app is now ready for download.

According to the festival's Facebook page, music lovers can now start getting prepped for the event by checking out biographies of performers, a map and a schedule of events.

Folk on the Rocks runs from July 14 to 16.

Detox centre society forms

The Beaufort Delta Detox Centre Society held its founding meeting on June 26.

Founding members of the board are Winston Moses, Susan Peffer, Edward Wright, Joseph Amos and Roy Goose.

"The board agreed that Northerners have experts within recovery and can be utilized to assist in bringing recovery to those that are suffering from addictions from alcohol, drugs, foreign and illegal substances," the group stated in a news release.

Now the group will begin lobbying the territorial and federal governments for funds to establish the centre.

"The board agrees that it will not be easy to obtain and secure funding to establish such a project, but have endeavored to work with diligence towards this goals and objectives," stated the release.

Polar bear plan released

Environment and Natural Resources Minister Robert C. McLeod, acting on behalf of the Northwest Territories Conference of Management Authorities, recently released the Inuvialuit Settlement Region Polar Bear Joint Management Plan and the Framework for Action for Management of Polar Bears in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region.

The conference of management authorities now has until March 27, 2018, to develop a consensus agreement on the implementation of the plans.

"Management of polar bears in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region is complex and these documents will help facilitate an integrated and common approach to polar bear management across all jurisdictions, including Nunavut and Yukon, by outlining recommended areas where further action should be taken," stated McLeod in a news release.

Polar bears are listed as a species of concern in both the NWT and Canada.

Immigration strategy released

A five-year immigration strategy from the GNWT aims to grow the territory's population and improve its economy.

Goals of the plan include attracting skilled foreign nationals, new entrepreneurs, consolidating administrative processes and supporting foreign nationals in their integration and settlement in the territory.

"The strategy will serve as a blueprint for a territorial approach to optimizing immigration programs in the NWT over the next five years," stated Alfred Moses, Minister of Education, Culture and Employment, in a news release.

"Beyond the economic benefits, welcoming new people to our territory contributes to the vibrant, diverse cultural landscape that makes the North a unique place to live."
