Seniors' Society gets new executive
Tom Makepeace returns as president for second year

HAY RIVER
The Hay River Seniors' Society now has a full executive with a familiar face at the helm.

At a board meeting in April, the four members of the executive were chosen.

That includes Tom Makepeace returning for a second year as president.

The other members of the executive are vice-president Ron Shaw, secretary Velma Rowe and treasurer Pat Burnstad.

There are also four directors: Ida Studney, Penny Roy, Shirley Sloat and Pauline Flewelling.

At the society's annual general meeting on March 29 just four people agreed to sit on the organization's board of directors, despite about 20 members attending the gathering.

Those initial volunteers at the AGM were Makepeace, Burnstad, Rowe and Studney willing to serve on the board.

After the AGM, a couple of meetings of the board of directors, which elects the executive, were held and more people stepped forward to join the leadership group.

Makepeace said things were able to be finalized at the April 10 meeting.

"It just took a little bit of organization to get everybody comfortable with what they have to do really," he said.

Makepeace said he decided to serve once again as president because the other people on the board were hesitant about taking that position.

"If you look at it, most of the people are new," he noted. "That's what we found last time. It's hard to get organized if you're just stepping

into something new."

Aside from being president for the past year, Makepeace has also served on the board for several years.

There are about 750 seniors in the community.

Anyone 55 years of age or over can join the Hay River Seniors' Society.
