New principal at Sissons

Starting this fall, students at J.H. Sissons School will have a new principal.

Brigitte Rivet, a teacher in Yellowknife schools since 1994 will be acting principal for the 2017-18 school year. For the past six years she has been assistant principal at the school. Rivet takes over from Rachell Simmons who is going on leave for a year. Fun fact, the new principal rides motorcycles in her spare time.

Open government meeting

A GNWT minister wants to hear from the public about how the government can be more open and transparent. Louis Sebert, the minister responsible for public engagement and transparency, is holding a meeting tonight at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre to gather input.

Sebert has been travelling the territory holding meetings as the GNWT develops an open government policy. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.

Chamber announces new board

The NWT Chamber of Commerce is under new management following its annual general meeting last month.

Trevor Wever of Air Tindi steps in as president, with Bill Kellett as first vice-president, Jenni Bruce as second vice-president and Yanik D'Aigle as secretary/treasurer. Outgoing president Richard Morland will continue as a director and member of the executive, joining newly elected directors Pam Coulter, Newton Grey, Derek McHugh, Caroline Wawzonek and Colleen Wellborn. The chamber announced the results of the elections of new officers of the board and directors on Tuesday.

Event for job seekers tonight

People looking for work in Yellowknife are invited to a free employment cafe tonight at the Greenstone Building at 5101 50 Ave. Employers will be available from 5 to 7 p.m., some are hiring on the spot and others are taking resumes. Job seekers are encouraged to dress for an interview and bring their CVs.

The event also includes an informal networking portion and information about educational opportunities.

Land learning

Naujaat

A group of Tuugaalik Grade 9 students were out on the land for some traditional skills learning and a whole lot of fun near Naujaat this past week.

The students were escorted by teacher Lloyd Francis, cultural teacher Laimikki Malliki and guide Jerry Nuluk.

First quarter results

Baker Lake

Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM) reported first quarter net income earlier this month of $76 million, or $0.33 per share.

The result includes non-cash foreign currency translation gains on deferred tax liabilities of $7.9 million ($0.03 per share), non-recurring gains of $3.5 million ($0.02 per share), unrealized gains on financial instruments of $2.8 million ($0.01 per share), various mark-to-market and other adjustment losses of $1.4 million ($0.01 per share) and non-cash foreign currency translation losses of $0.9 million (nil per share).

To exclude these items would result in adjusted net income of $64.1 million or $0.28 per share for the first quarter of 2017. In the first quarter of 2016, AEM reported net income of $27.8 million or $0.13 per share.

Fishing derby

Rankin Inlet

The annual Rankin Inlet Fishing Derby is set to go this coming weekend, from May 19 to 22.

This year's derby features cash prizes for the top 10 fishers in the categories of cod and trout.

Each category features cash prizes of $5,000 for first, $4,000 for second, $3,000 for third, $2,000 for fourth, $1,500 for fifth, $1,000 for sixth, $900 for seventh, $800 for eighth, $700 for ninth and $600 for tenth place.

This year's derby also features a photo contest, with the top 12 photos each earning $200 and being included in the 2018 Rankin Inlet Fishing Derby calendar.
