Missing child found safe

A seven-year-old child was found safe after going missing while skating on Back Bay Wednesday evening. RCMP stated in a news release the parents lost sight of the youngster at about 8:40 p.m. Volunteers started a search and the Mounties deployed two snowmobiles and a drone in an effort to locate the child.

Yellowknife Ground Search and Rescue was also activated. At about 9:20 p.m. the child was found by a volunteer, still skating, but some distance away. RCMP reminds people to be safe on the lakes this time of year.

Water delivery cost change approved

City council approved an interim reduction to a fee for customers using more than 15,000 litres of trucked water per month on Monday. The reduction came after at least three businesses raised concerns with city hall about sudden and sharp increases in their water bills starting in December.

Council has also called on city staff to review water rates and report back to council with recommendations before the end of the year.

Floating boardwalk removed

A plan for a floating boardwalk along a stretch of the northeastern shore of Grace Lake has been scuttled. City council voted Monday in favour of bylaw changes to remove the boardwalk, which together with a trail linking to Grace Lake Boulevard was estimated to cost $250,000. Concerns about the cost and feasibility of the boardwalk, which would need to be installed and removed each summer, led to it being scrapped following public consultation.

RCMP warns about child exploitation

The Northwest Territories RCMP is advising the public of the importance of teaching internet safety to children and youth.

The warning comes following an investigation into reports of child exploitation and pornography that revealed youth were coerced into providing nude photos through social media. The RCMP did not identify the perpetrator but said the adult plead guilty in court to charges of child luring, extortion and possession of child pornography. The adult was sentenced to three years in jail, according to police.

RCMP did not say where the culprit was residing or when he appeared in court.

"We want any potential victims to know that if they believe they are being exploited, they can come forward and we can investigate the file thoroughly," stated media relations officer Marie York-Condon in a news release.

Consensus reached to move bear plan forward

The Northwest Territories Conference of Management Authorities reached a consensus earlier this week to adopt the Inuvialuit Settlement Region Polar Bear Joint Management Plan and the Framework for Action for Management of Polar Bears in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region.

The documents were developed through collaboration between management partners and consultations with affected communities and jurisdictions with responsibilities for polar bear management in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region.

IRC seeks youth representative

The Inuvialuit Regional Corporation is looking for an Inuvialuit youth representative for the National Inuit Youth Council.

The council provides guidance and recommendations to the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami board of directors on topics related to Inuit youth.

It focuses on identifying important topics affecting Inuit youth, providing a mechanism for youth to share information, coordinating on matters relating to national Inuit youth programs and more.

The council holds two face-to-face meetings per year. Some travel is required. Anyone interested can find out more on the IRC website.

The deadline to apply is April 30.

Trappers receive largest payout in two years

The annual Saga, American Legend and Fur Harvesters fur auction in Finland drew nearly half a million in sales for NWT furs under the Government of the Northwest Territories' Genuine Mackenzie Valley Fur brand, nearly doubling the 2016 auction total.

The average price for marten at the auction was $113.35.
