Todd Dube returns to court in May
A man RCMP described as the leader of an alleged drug ring in Yellowknife will be back in court on May 23. Todd Dube, 21, appeared in territorial court yesterday via video from the North Slave Correctional Complex. He faces a long list of charges including cocaine trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime and threatening death. He has yet to make a plea on the charges. Dube has retained B.C. lawyer David Baker.

NWT gets more attractive for investment
The Fraser Institute Annual Survey of Mining Companies ranked NWT 21st out of 104 jurisdictions for investment attractiveness, rising from 35th place last year. NWT fell below six other Canadian provinces and territories and was beaten by Sweden and Botswana.
Nunavut ranked 31st, with the Yukon coming in at 15th. The rankings were weighted 40 per cent by policy and 60 per cent by mineral potential.

277,646 carats sold at Gahcho Kue
Mountain Province Diamonds Inc. announced yesterday it had completed the second sale of diamonds from the Gahcho Kue mine, with a grand total of 277,646 carats sold. The sale sold out, including unsold parcels left over from the first diamond sale in January. The next sale is scheduled for the end of the month, with approximately 193,900 carats on offer.

Folk adds to lineup
Folk on the Rocks released more of the lineup scheduled to play this summer's music festival.
These include the folk-punk band Northcote, The Pack A.D., Operators, Jason Collett, the indie electro synth-pop of Scary Bear Soundtrack, Francophone-Metis singer-songwriter Nadia Gaudet, City and Colour, Shad, the Ukes of Hazard, Earthbound Trio, the Dead South, Elephant Stone, solo artist Tanika Charles, Bears in Hazenmore, Boots and the Hoots, Megan Nash and Cynergii Entertainment, a 24-year-old DJ, event planner and producer. So far, three local bands will be hitting the stage – Priscilla's Revenge, Casey Koyczan a.k.a. the Bushman NT and Digawolf.

Zipping up for good attitudes
Naujaat
A group of nine students at Tuugaalik High School made new jackets for themselves during their teachers' professional development week in Naujaat recently.
The program is offered every year to a small group of high school students who have good attendance, are respectful and helpful, and complete their work.
The school has been providing the material and fur for the project for about the past five years.
The program serves two purposes, as it is seen by administrators as being a great incentive for students and it also helps those who may need a nice warm jacket.

Game on in territorial championships
Arviat
Players from no less than 10 communities descended upon Arviat this past weekend, as that community hosted the Nunavut midget hockey territorial championship.
The territorial event was divided into two divisions, with the combined Baker Lake and Arviat team, Rankin Inlet and the combined Gjoa Haven/Arctic Bay squad in the A Division and three combined teams – Iqaluit/Iglulik, Coral Harbour/Baker Lake and Whale Cove/Naujaat/Chesterfield Inlet – being in the B Division.
Final results were not known as of press time.
Code Club comes to the Kivalliq

Victor Sammurtok School was a happening place this past week, with two programming initiatives paying a visit to the school in Chesterfield Inlet.
The younger students in the school were excited over the visit of the Code Club, which helps them learn and improve their computer skills in a fun-filled environment.
Code Club is a voluntary initiative, founded in 2012, which aims to provide opportunities for children aged nine to 11 to developing coding skills through free after-school clubs.
Embrace Life Council member Delma Autut was also at Victor Sammurtok to deliver an anti-bullying program in connection with Pink Shirt Day.

Regional science fair on the way

Science students from across the Kivalliq are gearing up for the annual Kivalliq Regional Science Fair at the end of this month.
The fair will be held at Victor Sammurtok School in Chesterfield Inlet from March 24 to 27.
Tourney time
Rankin Inlet
The hockey-loving community of Rankin Inlet will be hosting two major tournaments this month to wrap up its hockey season for the year.
This week, from March 8 to 12, 10 teams will be competing in the inaugural Terence Tootoo Memorial senior men's hockey tournament.
Among the 10 squads with be an OCN Blizzard team comprised of former teammates of Jordin and Terence Tootoo from when they played in The Pas, Manitoba.
The following week, March 17 to 19, Rankin will host the annual Powerful Peewees tournament.
The Powerful Peewees is, to date, the final tournament of the year scheduled for Rankin.
