Man charged after Ndilo stabbing

A Toronto man is to appear in territorial court today after he was charged with aggravated assault following a stabbing in Ndilo over the weekend. According to an RCMP news release, officers were called at about 2:45 a.m. Sunday and found a man suffering from a stab wound. Police have not said exactly where the alleged attack took place.

The victim was taken to Stanton Territorial Hospital with serious injuries, police stated. His condition has not been released. Kesangar Mahalingam, 25, was held in custody for a bail hearing today.

Trudeau visiting Friday

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will hold a campaign-style town-hall event Friday.

Trudeau will come to the city after attending the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami summit in Iqaluit on Thursday, a spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office confirmed by e-mail on Monday.

The visit comes after a cross-country tour with town hall events and stops in coffee shops and restaurants. Liberal MP Michael McLeod's website is advertising the event and asking those interested in attending to RSVP, though an exact time and location had not been set as of Tuesday afternoon.

Valentine's skate tonight

Valentine's Day is almost upon us and for that reason the City of Yellowknife is hosting a free Valentine's skate this evening at the Multiplex. Family, friends and Valentines are encouraged to come out and lace up the blades for the skate which begins at 6 p.m. and runs until 7:15 p.m. It will be held on the Shortly Brown Arena. Participants are encouraged to take a photo with their Valentine and tag @ouryellowknife on Twitter, Facebook and/or Instagram for a chance to win a $25 City of Yellowknife gift certificate. Three winners will be randomly drawn tomorrow.

Lantern Festival begins tomorrow

Somba K'e Civic Plaza will be lit up for three straight nights beginning tomorrow for the third annual Lantern Festival. Residents are encouraged to come out, brave the cold and enjoy the colourful glow and creative designs of more than 500 lanterns. People are also invited to add their own lanterns to the display at any time before or during the festival. The lantern lighting takes place tomorrow, Friday and Saturday evenings beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Time for the Plate

Rankin Inlet

Fans of full-contact hockey will be in their glory when the Polar Bear Plate juvenile/junior 'C' gets underway this coming week in Rankin Inlet.

The Plate is scheduled to run Feb. 16-19.

As of press time, eight teams are expected to compete in the annual event, including the defending champion Iqaluit squad.

The members of the biathlon team representing Naujaat's 3055 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (RCACC) at upcoming competitions were officially announced by Capt. Lloyd Francis this past week.

Listed here are the members of the 3055 RCACC Naujaat biathlon team: Jonah Allianaq, Macleod Arnatsiaq, Tigumiaq Haqpi, Kasandra Katokra, Melanie Kaunak, Jack Kopak, Jan Kopak, Aaron Kopak, Bridgette Malliki and Ron Sinvanertok.

Learn first aid

Rankin Inlet

The Rankin Inlet Volunteer Fire Department held a standard first aid class with CPR and AED certifications this past weekend, Feb. 4 to 5, in Rankin.

The course was held to certify the department's newest recruits.

A Grade 12 potential grads meeting is scheduled to be held tomorrow, Feb. 9, at Jonah Amitnaaq Secondary School in Baker Lake, beginning at 7 p.m.

Minister Responsible for the Status of Women Monica EllKanayuk is calling for nominations for appointments to the Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women Council.

Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women Council plays an important role advocating for women and giving advice to the minister on matters affecting women in Nunavut.

Any woman living in Nunavut who is 18 years or older is eligible to be nominated.

Nominations must be received by the minister's office by 5 p.m. Eastern time on Friday, Feb. 24.

Rankin Inlet's own NHLer, Jordin Tootoo of the Chicago Black Hawks, celebrated his 34th birthday this past week. Tootoo's birthday is the second day of the second month (Feb. 2).
