The next day, a person carrying what looked like a metal pipe attempted to rob Winks Convenience Store on Forrest Drive, but escaped without any cash, the news release stated. Joanasie Qumuaqtuq, 18, faces two charges of robbery, two charges of disguise with intent and a charge of escaping from lawful custody.

Dettah ice road still closed

The ice road to Dettah has yet to open this winter, as the ice remains too thin for traffic, according to Department of Transportation spokesperson Ioana Spiridonica.

Ice must be at least 35 cm thick before opening to the public.

The average opening date over the last 15 years has been Dec. 21, according to the department. It opened last year on Jan. 2.

Crews are expected to check the ice again today and will begin construction when it is deemed safe, Spiridonica said.
