The school has a regular breakfast program which features cereal, fruit and granola bars, but, a few times a year, staff members like to go all out and give the students a special top-of-the-line breakfast to start their day.

December's morning feast featured pancakes, fruit, applesauce and breakfast sausage.

Vice-principal Julia MacPherson said the students really enjoyed the meal and loved the pancakes.

She said the next big breakfast is planned for February with, once again, teachers and support-staff members volunteering to come in early, prepare and serve the tasty treats.

"We've been holding, I'd say, three or four of these big breakfasts a year during the five years I've been in Naujaat," said MacPherson.

"We just think it's really important to give the students a nice hot breakfast, or meal, a few times throughout the year.

"We were pretty cramped for space when the school was kindergarten to Grade 12, and, although we did have a turkey dinner at Christmas a few times, it proved to be a bit difficult with the lack of space."

With the new high school opening this year, the staff decided to try a big pancake breakfast on the students' suggestion.

MacPherson said the breakfast in the new school was a big hit with the students, and they decided to carry on with the new tradition.

She said the students really enjoyed the meal and having a full belly for the whole day.

"The kids are very appreciative of our regular breakfast program, but, every now and then, it's nice to have a special treat.

"When the kids come in on the morning of the breakfast, they go to their classroom and everything is handed out.

"The volunteers for that day come in early and everything is usually cooked and ready to go by the time the students arrive.

"We have about 180 students right now, and we make three pancakes per student along with the other food items."
