Man charged in Dettah death to be sentenced

A 30-year-old man who pleaded guilty to the beating death of his uncle in Dettah will be back in Supreme Court on Feb. 14 for a sentencing hearing. Stanley Abel Jr. appeared in front of Judge Louise Charbonneau on Monday. He was charged in March 2016 after Herman Abel was found badly hurt in a residence in Dettah and died of his injuries.

Man charged after drug raid

A Yellowknife man is charged with possession of crack cocaine for the purpose of trafficking after drug raids in the city last Friday. According to a news release, police searched an apartment downtown. Five grams of crack cocaine, trafficking paraphernalia and cash were seized. The accused will appear in court on March 21.

At a second residence, a small amount of crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia were seized. Ten individuals were arrested at the scene, including seven youths. Charges have not yet been laid.

Giant Mine oversight opens house

The Giant Mine Oversight Board will host an open house at its office on Franklin Avenue tomorrow.

The board was established in 2015 as part of the Giant Mine remediation environmental agreement. The independent board of six monitors promotes, advises and broadly advocates for responsible clean up of the gold mine along the Ingraham Trail that closed in 2004.

The open house runs from 4 to 7 p.m. at 5014 50 Ave.

Library opens access to tutorial database

Registered Yellowknife Public Library users now have access to Lynda Library, an online learning website that hosts thousands of video tutorials that people can watch from the comfort of their own computer or mobile device. Lynda Library has a database of more than 4,000 tutorials ranging from photography to architecture.
