FOXY executive director and co-founder Candice Lys joined fellow co-founder Nancy MacNeill in Edmonton yesterday, where they were presented what's known as "Honours" by Gov. Gen. David Johnston.

According to a news release, the Governor General presents Honours on behalf of all Canadians in communities across the country to help share inspiring stories, celebrate tremendous contributions to our society. Lys and MacNeill were among 70 Canadians from across the country who received the honour.

They founded FOXY in 2012 with a goal of introducing a new way of talking with young women about sexual health, sexuality and relationships. They have taken their message to schools and youth groups throughout the North. Lys and MacNeill have since branched out to found SMASH (Strength, Masculinities and Sexual Health) - a parallel program designed for young males throughout the North. During a telephone interview on Wednesday with Yellowknifer, Lys said it feels great to be recognized again.

"We know that we do really great work in the North. We put a lot of out time, our energy and our heart into what we do," Lys said.

She added a large celebration is planned for next March to celebrate the program's successes.

"We're bringing together past participants from all over the North and really celebrating the fact that we've made it for five tears," Lys said.
