National Day of Remembrance observed

Flags were lowered to half mast at several locations in the city yesterday to mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. The day is commemorated in Canada on Dec. 6 marking the anniversary of the 1986 École Polytechnique massacre in Montreal in which an armed student shot and killed 14 women and wounded 10 others. Caroline Cochrane, minister responsible for the status of women, spoke at a memorial event hosted by the NWT Status of Women at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre.

Art goes on the Internet

Arviat

Students in Arviat are preparing for a virtual art tour of the Winnipeg Art Gallery's (WAG) Our Land exhibit of Nunavut's Inuit art collection.

The school is collaborating with the gallery and two other schools in Vancouver, B.C., and Brampton, Ont., through the organization TakingITGlobal's Connected North program.

"We offer a virtual field trip," said WAG head of education Rachel Baerg. "We'll bring them virtually into our galleries, give a gallery tour, talk about stories and then we can also give virtual art-making workshops.

"Students learn remotely from their classrooms by connecting with us."

Baerg said the art making is a bit like a cooking show.

"They'll have all the materials in front of them, and we'll lead them through the workshop and celebrate Inuit art making with those schools."

The project will see students creating their own wall hangings of Inuit art, similar to the many hangings in the Nunavut collection.
