Furanyl fentanyl charges have been laid against 22-year-old Darcy Oake.
Oake was charged Wednesday with unlawfully importing and trafficking furanyl fentanyl into Yellowknife, possession of furanyl fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking, criminal negligence causing bodily harm by providing a person with furanyl fentanyl, and failing to comply with a court order from Oct. 27, 2015 not to purchase, possess or consume a controlled substance.
According to courthouse documents, the first four charges were related to incidents that occurred between Oct. 30 and Nov. 28 of this year.
The charges come after RCMP executed a search warrant Saturday at 166 Borden Dr. where they discovered a powdery crystallized substance later identified as furanyl fentanyl.
The land title for the residence lists Dean Oake as the most recent owner of the home. He declined to comment when Yellowknifer reached him by phone earlier this week.
RCMP have not linked the furanyl fentanyl discovered at the Borden Drive home to a string of opioid overdoses that occurred in Yellowknife last week but have confirmed the drug was involved in a "suspected drug-related event at the residence."
According to a Thursday RCMP news release, the Canada Border Services Agency seized a package from China on Nov. 28 that was headed for Yellowknife. RCMP believe this package contained furanyl fentanyl and that it is linked to these charges. A court date has not yet been set for Darcy Oake.
