NORTHWEST TERRITORIES
Women made up 41 per cent of candidates in the hamlet elections that took place on Dec. 12.

Eight communities in the territory held elections on Dec. 12.

In an e-mail to News/North, GNWT director of community governance Bob Brooks pointed out that there was a high representation of women among this year's candidates, which is similar to numbers from the previous two years.

In 2015, 43 per cent of candidates were female while women made up 41 per cent of candidates in 2014.

The highest number is in Ulukhaktok where 80 per cent of the community government's representatives are female. Mayor Laverna Klengenberg and councillors Connie Alanak, Jean Ekpakohak, Margaret Kanayok and David Kuptana were acclaimed during last Monday's election.

In Fort Resolution, 66 per cent of elected representatives are female. Results were so close that it sparked an automatic recount, but the results remained the same. Brandie Miersch, Arthur Beck and Angela McKay are now councillors. Voter turnout was 51 per cent.

Fifty per cent of candidates elected in Fort Providence are female. Hilda Sabourin, Evelyn Krutko, Roger Sanderson and Jonas Landry are the community's new councillors. Voter turnout was 32 per cent.

Female representatives in Paulatuk's hamlet government stayed the same at 33 per cent after the election was acclaimed. Ray Ruben Sr. stays on as mayor and councillors are Millie Thrasher, Donna Ruben, Bill Ruben Sr., Jason Reidford and Michael Green.

A bylaw could be held in the new year to determine a sixth councillor for the community.

Thirty-three per cent of Enterprise's government is also made up of female representatives.

Winnie Cadieux, Matthew Gauthier and Daniel Harley were elected last Monday with a 32 per cent voter turnout.

No women were elected in Aklavik and Eugene Pascal, Richard Storr, Jordan McLeod and Frederick D. Arey are new councillors.

Forty per cent of eligible voters cast ballots in the election.

None of the newly elected councillors in Sachs Harbour are female, with Floyd Lennie elected mayor and Kyle Wolki and Issiac Elanik elected to council. Voter turnout in Sachs Harbour was 77 per cent.

After a recount in Tuktoyaktuk, Cindy Legrow was elected to council. Ryan Yakeleya, Jackie Jacobson and Vince Teddy are also now councillors. Voter turnout information was 45 per cent.

Fort McPherson's election had also been scheduled to take place on Dec. 12, but was postponed until Feb. 20, 2017.
