Sutherland's Drugs robbed

RCMP announced Thursday they are searching for a male suspect after a person stole an unspecified amount of money from Sutherland's Drugs last week.

A man reportedly approached the drugstore counter around 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 6, grabbed cash from the register and ran from the building. They are searching for an approximately 25-year-old male with a thin build and measuring 5'9'' tall. The suspect is believed to have been wearing a black toque, black snowboarding coat and white snow pants. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.

Police seek help finding man

Police are seeking the public's help to find Jordan Peter, 27, who was last seen Saturday and reported as missing yesterday. He's described as being of indigenous descent, five feet seven inches tall, weighing about 140 pounds with brown hair and black eyes. He has a tattoo on the right side of his neck that says "Cruze" in cursive writing as well as a skeleton/skull tattoo on his right hand. He may be wearing a dark grey winter jacket, black sweat pants and black toque.

Driver in crash comes forward

Police say a driver of a vehicle who was being sought after a two vehicle crash on 52 Avenue on Dec. 2 has come forward. RCMP issued a news release Thursday stating they were seeking the driver of a vehicle that had fled the scene of a crash that injured another person. That driver came forward over the weekend, a news release states. It's not known if the driver who allegedly fled will face charges.

Christmas light voting deadline extended

The deadline for voting for the best Christmas light decorations has been extended until 4:30 p.m. today. The contest is sponsored by the City of Yellowknife and Northland Utilities. Photos of the top entries can be viewed on the city's Facebook page. You can vote for your choice by liking the photographs.

Rankin Inlet

Competitive members of the Rankin Inlet Aqsarniit Ujauttaq (Northern Lights) Gymnastics Club will be in the Bahamas this week to compete in a fournation international gymnastics competition.

Although hoping to do well at the competition, head coach Lisa Kresky looks at the event as a valuable learning experience that the female gymnasts will be able to draw upon going forward to compete in other competitions in Canada and abroad.

Teen mops up problem fox

Arviat

Deanna Netser, 17, used a frozen mop to kill a fox that was holedup under the family snowmobile in Arviat this past week.

Deanna's sister, Samantha, threw her the mop after the fox tried to bite the family's dog and Deanna took it from there.

The fox was taken by wildlife officers and sent to an Alberta lab to have it tested for rabies.

As of press time, there was no word on the results of the rabies test.

Oil spill closes school

Baker Lake

An oil spill earlier this month has caused Rachel Arngnammaktiq Elementary School in Baker Lake to remain closed until this coming month.

The spill happened in the interior day tank, resulting in 150 to 250 litres of fuel being spilled.

Students are going to class in Baker's community hall until the holiday break.

No information had been released on the reason for the spill as of press time.
