BEHCHOKO
A 40-year-old Behchoko man faces charges of sexual assault and sexual interference in connection with two incidents within 20 days, according to police.

Peter John Lafferty was charged Oct. 2 with sexual assault against a woman in the community.

Court records indicate he was charged and released under conditions - although the conditions weren't available for review at the Yellowknife courthouse last week.

On Oct. 22, RCMP in the community were called to a home where police were told of an alleged sexual assault by Lafferty against a female minor.

He was charged with sexual assault and sexual interference. The second charge refers to anyone who, for a sexual purpose, touches directly or indirectly any part of a person under 16 years of age.

The charges against Lafferty for the two incidents were announced Oct. 24 in a news release from RCMP.

Following the second incident, he was held in custody pending a hearing to decide if should be released prior to trial.

The outcome of the Oct. 27 hearing wasn't clear because court records weren't available for review the following day, the Crown prosecutor wasn't available to comment and the RCMP spokesperson didn't have access to the information.

Police are asking anyone with information about their investigation to call Behchoko RCMP at (867) 392-1111 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477, online at nwtnutips.com or via texting NWTNUTIPS plus your message to 274637.
