HAY RIVER
A new book club has been formed in Hay River so people can get together and share the joy of reading. It has been organized by Nancy Makepeace.
"It's just a worthwhile way to share books, I find," she said. "We have a lot of readers in the community, and it's fun."
The next meeting is set for Oct. 24 in the club room of the Hay River Seniors' Society at the Whispering Willows Seniors Complex.
"Anyone free at that time is welcome to come, shift workers or whatever, or take their lunch," said Makepeace. "It's just an hour from 1:30 to about 2:30."
The new club is looking for more members to add to the several that joined for the first gathering a month ago.
Makepeace said the club is not just for seniors, even though it meets at the seniors' club room, but for anyone interested in reading.
Unlike some book clubs, members do not read the same book and then gather afterward to discuss it.
"Not at this point," said Makepeace.
"Until we get more members and decide to do that, we're just bringing books that we've enjoyed throughout the month and discussing them and sharing them. So it's just whatever you like to read."
Two members of the group have been reading books about Metis history.
"So that was pretty interesting," said Makepeace. "And they shared titles that they really enjoyed."
She has been reading "Stone by Stone," which is about ancient sites on the Canadian Prairies.
Makepeace described it as an informal book club right now.
"If the club grows and at some point they want to decide to read Canadiana or themes or whatever, that would be for the group to decide later," she said.
Makepeace said there have been several book clubs in the past in Hay River, including one long-running group that existed until about a year ago.
