B.C. man charged after taxi assault

A 37-year-old Kamloops, B.C. man has been charged with aggravated assault in connection with an alleged fight that injured a taxi driver Oct. 12, according to an RCMP news release. In a previous release, police stated the driver was dropping off a fare in the Kam Lake neighbourhood when a fight occurred early last Wednesday. The driver was taken to hospital with undisclosed injuries. The B.C. man is scheduled to next appear in territorial court Nov. 15.

Date set for murder case hearing

A half-day preliminary inquiry has been set for next year for a man charged with second degree murder, attempted murder and aggravated assault. Kevin Mantla faces those charges in connection with the Sept. 28, 2015 death of Elvis Lafferty and injury of Elsie Mantla in a Lanky Court apartment building.

The hearing, which tests the strength of evidence prior to proceeding to a trial on the charges, is expected to hear from one witness, defence lawyer Jay Bran told territorial court Judge Garth Malakoe on Tuesday. The hearing has been set for March 8. Mantla remains in custody.

Headframe demolition to begin

A company hired to demolish the Robertson Headframe arrived yesterday to start its work.

Rakowski Cartage & Wrecking will start removing attached buildings over several days, according to Scott Stringer of Newmont Mining Corporation. Then work shifts to preparing for what he called the blasting phase. Weather permitting, that's expected to be in late October or early November. A date on when the controlled explosion will take place will be determined later.

MLAs to hear from info commissioner

A committee of MLAs will hear Thursday at noon at the legislative assembly from Elaine Keenan Bengts, the territory's information and privacy commissioner, about privacy and access to information issues following the release of her annual report last week. The report included recommendations on improving privacy of those in the health system and again calls on the territorial government to amend the access to information law to include municipalities.

Hockey camp begins

Rankin Inlet

The third annual season opener hockey camp for minor hockey players is underway in Rankin Inlet with more than 110 kids taking part in the event.

The camp features a strong mentorship component, with players who have gone through the minor hockey program in Rankin returning to help instruct the younger players.

The camp also includes office training and a strong literacy component facilitated by Adriana Kusugak of the Nunavut Literacy Council.

The camp runs until Oct. 22.

Inmate at large

Rankin Inlet

An inmate who was unlawfully at large from the Rankin Inlet Healing Facility managed to steal a privatelyowned vehicle and leave it badly damaged before returning to the facility and being immediately arrested on Oct. 8.

Stanley Kenalogak, 22, of Baker Lake was out on a work pass when he escaped custody.

Kenalogak was charged with being unlawfully at large, theft of a motor vehicle and driving a motor vehicle while being disqualified.

He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in territorial court in Iqaluit on Oct. 31.

Family reunion

The children of the late Jessie Oonark held a family reunion on Oct. 1.

The reunion was held to gather the internationally acclaimed artist's remaining children and their families to cherish Oonark's life and to embrace her as their mother.

Drug raids lead to arrests

Rankin Inlet

Two Rankin Inlet men have been arrested and charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking after members of the Rankin Inlet detachment of the RCMP executed search warrants earlier this month.

The Oct. 12 raids resulted in the RCMP seizing approximately seven ounces of marijuana and $2,145 in cash.

A 44yearold man faces an intent to traffic charge, as well as a second charge of careless storage of a fireman.

A 30yearold man also faces a charge of possession with the intent to traffic.

Both men have been released with conditions and are scheduled to make their first court appearance in Rankin Inlet on Nov. 15.

Deadline for Northern Youth Abroad approaches

Northern Youth Abroad is accepting applications for its 2017 programming.

Any youth, aged 15 to 20, living in Nunavut or the NWT is eligible to apply.

The deadline for applying is Nov. 10.

Thrift store in the works

Baker Lake

The preemployment training program is working to develop a Thrift Shop in Baker Lake for the sale of recycled clothing and toys.

Organizers are asking the community for donations of clothing, toys and household goods that can be sold at the store.

They are also looking for -- to be donated or purchased -- a filing cabinet with a lock, pots and pans, cutlery, plates, bowls and mugs, a flipchart stand and a projector.
