A taxi driver was taken to hospital after an alleged assault in the Kam Lake area late Tuesday night or early Wednesday, police say.

RCMP officers responded to a call early Wednesday from a person alleging they had been assaulted, according to RCMP spokesperson Marie York-Condon.

The driver of the cab had been dropping someone off in the Kam Lake neighbourhood - police haven't said which street - when a fight ensued, leaving the driver injured.

Police were flagged down by the driver who was with the vehicle shortly after midnight. An ambulance was called and the driver taken to Stanton Territorial Hospital for treatment. The extent of his or her injuries weren't disclosed.

RCMP called the canine unit to help search for the male suspect who was found a short time later.

The suspect remains in custody and charges are pending. Police haven't elaborated on what those charges may involve.

York-Condon stated in an e-mail nothing was reported as stolen.

It wasn't clear when the person in custody would appear in court for the charges to be laid. Police did not name the cab company involved. City Cab's general manager declined to comment and a request for comment from Aurora Taxi was not returned.
