50/50 parking lot to require parking pass

Starting on Sept. 12, people parking at the lot located on the corner of 50 Street and 50 Avenue will require a monthly parking pass from the City of Yellowknife.

The passes, which cost $125, are available from city hall beginning on Sept. 7, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Parking lines and signs indicating the new requirements are scheduled for installation sometime before Sept. 12.

Young Adults Group host meet-and-greet

The Yellowknife Association for Community Living starts their new social season with a meet-and-greet for residents of Yellowknife, Ndilo and Dettah between the ages of 19 and 30.

New special events during the coming season will be planned at the meeting on Sept. 15 from 6.30 to 9.30 p.m. at the Abe Miller Building at 4912 53 St.

The social group offers opportunities to meet new people and participate in activities like hikes, yoga sessions, cooking classes and more.

Participants should RSVP by Sept. 10.

Curbside giveaway kicks off this weekend

If you have items around the house you want to give away this weekend is your chance.

Residents can leave unwanted items in good working order on the curb with a free sign from Friday at 4 p.m. until Monday at 10 p.m.

The city reminds people to be respectful of others property and only take items that are clearly marked as free and placed on the edge of the property. All left-over items are the owner's responsibility to remove. Items can range from books and DVDs to clothing, small appliances and furniture.

Community Showcase offers sign up

More than 60 organizations focusing on sport, recreation, leisure and education come together Sept. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Multiplex. Residents can sign up for programs or volunteer for the fall season of sporting and recreation activities. Non-profit organizations can still sign up for a table by contacting the city.

Travelling youth return home

Youth who partook in the Northern Youth Abroad program have returned to their respective communities, including two from the Deh Cho.

Fort Simpson's Brandon Hardisty and Fort Providence's Dallas Thom are both back in their communities ready to attend yet another year of school.

Next year, they will be eligible for the next stage of the program.

Fort Simpson pool closes for health and safety

The Fort Simpson swimming pool closed down temporarily on Aug. 23, 25 and 26 due to health and safety concerns.

According to notices posted to the pool's Facebook page, staff expected to commence regular hours on Aug. 27.

The nature of the health and safety concern was not immediately apparent.

Pool organizers apologized for the inconvenience.

Floor hockey tourney moves forward

Players in Fort Simpson who are missing the ice will have a chance at some hockey soon – the floor variety.

The village's four-on-four floor hockey tournament has been set for Sept. 9 and 10 for ages 14 and older.

The registration deadline for teams is Sept. 9 at noon, with the first game starting that evening at 6 p.m.

Games will take place in the village recreation centre gymnasium.

Junior kindergarten resumes in Fort Simpson

An e-mail sent out by Bompas Elementary School principal Kelley Andrews-Klein states junior kindergarten students will be attending half days in the afternoons from 1 to 1:30 p.m.

Resource company applies for permit

Paramount Resources has applied for a new land-use permit and water licence for a site near Fort Liard, where they have three wells.

The company's current permit and licence are set to expire Oct. 5.

The application is currently being reviewed by the Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board.

Documents submitted to the board so far include a spill contingency plan, reclamation estimate and monitoring programs, among others.

Fatality on Dempster

A Chinese tourist has died as a result of a single-vehicle accident near the Peel River Aug. 27.

Police responded to the call around 8:45 p.m., stated a press release from the RCMP issued

Aug. 29.

While police would not say in which direction the vehicle was travelling, civilian member Marie York-Condon said the accident took place at mile marker 70, about two kilometres south of the Peel River ferry.

"Members attended the scene and located the four occupants of the vehicle," the news release stated.

"Three persons, one adult male, and two adult females, had exited the vehicle and had sustained injuries.

"The fourth occupant, an adult female, was found deceased inside the vehicle, with the seatbelt intact in the front passenger seat."

No foul play is suspected and road and driving conditions may have been factors, it continued.

The occupants of the vehicle were visiting from China and the Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China have been contacted.

Call for volunteers

Inuvik's annual Terry Fox Run is fast approaching and the call has gone out for volunteers.

Organizers are looking for two people to work at the registration desk, six to work a total of three water stations, and two people to run the barbecue.

The event is scheduled for Sept. 18, and will go from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Co-organizer Natasha Kulikowski said last year more than 50 participants raised a total of more than $4,000 for the cause.

The event is open to runners and walkers of all abilities and ages and is made possible by the volunteers who donate their time and energy.

Canada Post reaches tentative agreement with union

After nine months of negotiations, Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) reached a tentative agreement on Aug. 30.

According to a news alert from CUPW, the negotiating committee from the union unanimously recommended that the National Executive Board accept the agreements in principal.

The agreement has yet to be ratified.

This comes after federally appointed mediation that delayed proposed work disruptions in the Northwest Territories and Alberta on Monday.
