HAY RIVER
The Hay River SPCA is no longer involved in operating the community's animal shelter, but the organization still exists, says its president.
"We're completely out and so whatever they're going to do with it now it's up to them," said Heather Foubert of the town's takeover of the animal shelter, effective at the end of August.
"But the SPCA as a group is still together."
Foubert said it will still work with other SPCAs to help facilitate the transport of animals from the area.
In the past, animals from Hay River have been sent to receive care in Yellowknife, Manitoba, Alberta and B.C. As recently as Aug. 30, a dog named Dakota (formerly known as Kumar) found a new home in Yellowknife, according to a Hay River SPCA Facebook post.
"If anybody has any concerns about animals in this community, they can certainly contact us and we'll do whatever we can to see that it's looked after," she said.
Foubert is also hoping the town will carry on with a program under which anybody who brings in a receipt for spaying or neutering will get financial assistance.
Mayor Brad Mapes said the town has hired a contractor to run the animal shelter with two workers.
