Amnesty week coming to dump

Amnesty week at the Yellowknife Solid Waste facility begins this Saturday and runs through Sept. 23. According to the city, residents will be able to drop off excess residential garbage for one week without having to pay the standard residential vehicle charge of $10. The city is reminding residents however that other tipping fees and the two-bag limit for curbside collection still apply.

City to discuss multiculturalism

A speaking series on multiculturalism taking place in cities across Canada is being held at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre today.

Called Living Together, the event is discussing how Canadian cities are facing the challenge of creating a more inclusive, successful society. The day-long series is inviting local residents, community leaders, researchers and young people to discuss their values, attitudes and beliefs and the struggles that divide and shape the city.

The public event is taking place from 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

City declares Sept. 22 Car Free Day

Yellowknife city council has declared Sept. 22 as Car Free Day in the city. The city along with Ecology North and Natural Resources Green Team is encouraging residents to walk, ride bicycles or take free public transit on that day. Office teams can also be registered to participate in the corporate challenge to see which office has the best participation for Yellowknife Car Free Day. The city stated that there will also be a classroom team challenge.

RCMP halts probe into St. Patrick's Church fire

RCMP in Yellowknife says that its investigation into a suspicious fire at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church has come to a halt. The early morning fire on June 4 damaged the building and forced the closure of the flea market inside. In an e-mail to Yellowknifer, Marie York-Condon stated that the cause of the fire has never been determined. "All investigative leads have been exhausted. The RCMP is seeking any information the public might have to assist at this time," she stated. The flea market remains closed and repairs to the roof have yet to be completed.
