They didn't end up hunting a moose, but 10 Grade 6 students who went on an on-the-land trip last week still had a great time.

"It was fun anyway," said Andy Albert, adding that his favourite part of the trip was playing truth or dare with his friends.

Hayli Hoover enjoyed that part, too.

"We dared Joel (McNabb-Lennie) to do some really fun stuff," she laughed, declining to reveal what the dare was.

Vice principal Lorne Guy led the trip as part of the school's culture-based education program. He had support from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, as well as three great guides and hosts: elders Angus and Freida Alunik, plus their dog Sheppy.

"They were just wonderful hosts and gave us an opportunity to really experience being out on the land and seeing the area that we have around us," said Guy.

The group had left with hopes to hunt a moose but didn't end up seeing one.

"We did see signs of bears and wolf and moose tracks as well, so I think the kids had a good time with that," said Guy.

They went to the main part of the Mackenzie River, where the Aluniks have a campsite, and also took a day trip to Shallow Bay.

"The minnows," said student Joseph Moore about his favourite part of the trip.

"We got like a thousand!"

Jesse Israel said the Aluniks were very nice hosts and he enjoyed seeing all the nature.

"It was very nice on the land," added Muria McDonald.

"It was fun with my friends."

Paige Steen-Cockney said it was beautiful.

"It was awesome," she said.

Not wasting a moment of the fall season, Guy headed out again earlier this week with another group of students from junior high.
