Police probe car thefts
in Niven Lake area
Yellowknife RCMP is investigating a rash of vehicle break-ins and thefts in the Niven Lake area on Thursday night.
According to an RCMP news release, police received reports of multiple vehicles being broken into overnight and valuables stolen. Police do not say how many vehicles were broken into or exactly what was stolen.
They are warning all residents to lock vehicles and do not leave valuables in vehicles.
Police also advise people to park in well lit areas and report any suspicious activity.

Talks to 'resolve' murder case underway
A lawyer representing a man charged with murder and attempted murder after a violent incident in September last year suggested in court Tuesday there may soon be a development in the case.
Kevin Mantla was charged following the death of Elvis Lafferty and injury of a woman Sept. 28.
Defence lawyer Jay Bran said in territorial court yesterday afternoon he and the Crown prosecutor have been "in discussions to resolve" the case. That's language typically used to indicate a plea deal.

Foxy fosters music skills
FOXY, or Fostering Open eXpression among Youth, is working with professional musicians, producers and young participants of its program as part of a music recording project.
According to a recent FOXY news release, the project includes five original songs that were written and taught by FOXY peer leaders and professional recording artist, Veronica Johnny.
Songs from the project will be recorded with Spirit Walkers Productions this week in Yellowknife.

Juried art show coming
The City of Yellowknife Heritage Committee and Yellowknife Artist Run Community Centre are inviting local artists to submit proposals for an upcoming art show.
According to a City of Yellowknife news release, a jury of representatives will review the proposals and the selected projects will be displayed in an art show from Nov. 14 to 19.
The event this year will showcase Yellowknife's multi-faceted history through music and theatre performances, the news release states.

Families celebrate graduation
Chesterfield Inlet
Friends and family members will be gathering at Victor Sammurtok School in Chesterfield Inlet for the Grade 12 graduation ceremony for the school's Class of 2016 this week. The ceremony will see eight students receive their Grade 12 diplomas.

Boil water advisory imposed
Whale Cove
A boil water advisory for residents of Whale Cove was imposed on Aug. 15. All residents are warned they must boil their water before consumption until further notice, after unacceptable levels of total coliform bacteria was discovered in the water system.
"The departments of Health and Community and Government Services are working with the Hamlet of Whale Cove to monitor the situation and to ensure the residents of Whale Cove are informed," stated Irma Arkus on behalf of the Department of Health.
"No cases of illness related to water supply have been detected and the advisory issued is for the safety of the community." The Department of Health advises that it is essential to boil water for drinking, infant formulas, juices, ice cubes, washing fruits and vegetables, cooking and brushing teeth, although all other activities do not require boiling. Additional samples were tested this past week and, as of press time, the boil water advisory was still in place.
Funding announced for garage facilities
Whale Cove/Chesterfield Inlet
Federal minister responsible for CanNor, Navdeep Bains, announced the communities of Whale Cove and Chesterfield Inlet will be receiving $373,000 in funding to modernize the garage facilities of their locally owned Inuit co-operatives, the Issatik Co-op in Whale and the Pitsiulak Co-op in Chester. The announcement was made this past week. The investment will support the upgrading and expansion of building sites at the two Co-ops, to ensure the safe storage and year-round maintenance of two fuel delivery trucks.
The improvements are expected to reduce oil spills and improve worker safety, which will help both co-operatives maintain their eligibility for a 10-year fuel-distribution contract with the Government of Nunavut. The contract will secure jobs, provide training opportunities for Iocal Inuit, and support the delivery of diesel to the communities' power plants and potential mines nearby.
In Whale Cove, CanNor is providing $200,500, with the Issatik Co-op adding $94,300 and Arctic Co-operatives $402,203, for a total investment of $697,003. In Chesterfield Inlet, CanNor is investing $172,500, with the Pitsiulak Co-op adding $43,054 and Arctic Co-operatives $1,892, for a total investment of $217,446.
Grad day coming to Rankin

The gymnasium at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik (MUI) will be packed with friends and family members as the school holds its annual graduation ceremony this coming Saturday, Aug. 27, beginning at 2 p.m. MUI's Class of 2016 will see 30 students receive their Grade 12 diplomas.
