Dominion Diamond shuffles employees
Dominion Diamond Corporation, controlling owner of the Ekati mine and co-owner of the Diavik mine, says it is relocating six employees from its Yellowknife sorting and valuation facility to its sorting facility in Toronto. According to an e-mail from the company on behalf of CEO Brendan Bell, Dominion also intends to relocate several employees to the Ekati mine site with exact numbers to be finalized.

Murder trial to restart
The murder trial of a 19-year-old woman accused of stabbing Daniel Faine once in the chest in Ndilo on Sept. 14, 2013 is set to begin today in NWT Supreme Court.
Faine died that morning. The woman cannot be named because she was a youth at the time of the alleged crime.
The trial had previously begun in March. A jury was selected and testimony was heard from several witnesses before a mistrial was declared because a key Crown witness was suddenly hospitalized. The trial will be heard by judge alone this time.

Man jumps into Great Slave Lake to flee police
A suspect was taken into custody early Saturday morning after a man fled police by jumping into Great Slave Lake.
According to an RCMP news release, officers in Ndilo were arresting a man wanted on outstanding warrants when he escaped custody, jumped into the lake and started to swim away.
With the help of a fire department boat, Mounties found the suspect as he tried to board an empty boat.
He was again taken to custody, police stated. The suspect was treated at Stanton Hospital and charges against him are pending. His name has not been released.

Olympic sprinter to race again tomorrow
Olympic sprinter Akeem Haynes will be competing in the men's 4x100 metre relay heat on Thursday morning at 8:40 a.m., according to the Rio Olympic Games schedule.
Last Saturday, Haynes competed in the preliminary men's 100-metre sprint, placing sixth in his heat. He placed 26th overall.
Haynes lived in Yellowknife from age six to 12, attending Weledeh Catholic School.

The community of Baker Lake is gearing up to host the Festival
By The Lake from Aug. 25 to 28. Numerous activities for all ages are planned for the event, including a number of performing artists, a giant fireworks display, live music, children's activities and many, many others.
Charges laid over break-ins
Rankin Inlet
Rankin Inlet RCMP made an arrest Aug. 5 after investigating a series of break-ins. Six break-ins have occurred during the past few weeks at businesses and residences, stated an RCMP news release. An 18-year-old male was charged with two counts of break-and-enter, one count of possession of break-in tools, and two counts of breaching a probation order after investigators reviewed video surveillance footage and made a positive identification in two of the break-ins. The suspect appeared in court on Aug 8.
Plane makes emergency landing

A Boeing 737-200 en route to Montreal from the Meadowbank gold mine near Baker Lake made an emergency landing in
Rankin Inlet on July 28. The cause was a sensor that went off mid-flight, indicating an emergency. The plane was carrying both passengers and cargo. All crew members and passengers were safe.

GN seeks feedback on Education Act changes

The Government of Nunavut is hosting a series of public meetings across the territory to gather public feedback on proposed changes to the Education Act. The proposed changes run the gamut from increasing standardization across the territory, especially for bilingual education, to underlining and clarifying the role of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit within the legislation. Also included are proposed changes that would shift some of the responsibilities of district education authorities to education staff, including the responsibility for funding early childhood education. Arviat hosted one of the public meetings on the Education Act at Qitiqliq Middle School Aug. 16.
